Formation of perfect paint with perfect viscosity, spreading capacity, stability and achievement of perfect color shade has to go through a proper system. Lack of quality or perfection in any of the step of formation of perfect paint can give you undesired results. Like other steps, use of good quality dispersant in perfect quantity is very important in formation of paint.

What does dispersant do in any paint?

As a novice you may wonder why dispersant is considered to be as important as colour pigments and other ingredient of the paint. But you will be surprised to know that dispersant is the main ingredient which helps in setting the right fore of attraction between two molecules of the pigment dispersions thus giving it right viscosity, stability and shade. Using the right type of dispersant in various types of paints is very important.

Some of which are polymeric dispersing solutions while some others are resin dispersing solutions. Comparison of the two can lead to long list of pros and cons. depending upon the kind of paint getting prepared and usage of the end user, dispersing solution can be selected. However according to expert’s opinion polymeric dispersing solutions disperse organic pigments much better than the resin counterparts. They give much better pigment concentration in the base grind as compares to the pigment concentration in resin dispersing solution. This concentration can be further diluted to attain desired shade and perfect tint. This diluted solution can easily be used for traditional coating. It has been observed that this high concentration pigment base leads to increased productivity of the paint which further leads to better utilization of the products, equipments and money. Another advantage of polymeric dispersing agents is that it can even disperse difficult to disperse pigments very easily thus leading to high productivity of even those dispersing agents.

If the pigment particles are very small then there can be strong force of repulsion in the paint which can lead to flocculation. Very large pigment particles can lead to other kind of problems in the paint. Intrinsic stability of the paint can be a issue even if the pigment size of the paint is perfect to achieve perfect paint solution. This intrinsic stability of the paint becomes the responsibility of the pigment dispersing solution. Pigment Preparations  solution sets the right forces between the particles hence leading to proper viscosity and strength of the color. Intrinsic strength of any good color is mainly judged by its milling time or the speed by which pigments tends to plateau in the curve. Polymeric dispersing solution is known to give better milling time to the paint leading to increase the intrinsic strength of the paint.
