Organic pigments are carbon-based synthetic colouring compounds known for their bright, vivid shades, high tinting strength, and transparency. Inorganic pigments are mineral-based (such as iron oxides or chrome yellows) and are known for their opacity and durability. Organic pigments are preferred in printing inks, textiles, and plastics where colour brilliance is critical, while inorganic pigments are favoured in industrial coatings for their weatherfastness.

Azo pigments are organic pigments characterised by one or more azo (-N=N-) groups and cover the yellow, orange, and red shade range. They are widely used in paints, inks, and plastics. Phthalocyanine pigments are a class of high-performance organic pigments known for their exceptional blue and green shades, outstanding lightfastness, and heat stability — widely used in demanding applications like automotive coatings, industrial paints, and high-quality printing inks.

For masterbatch and plastic applications, pigments need excellent dispersibility across multiple polymers (Polyolefins, PVC, EVA, ABS, Nylon), outstanding lightfastness and weatherfastness, heat stability up to processing temperatures, and low migration properties. Common grades used include Pigment Yellow 83, Pigment Red 48.2, Pigment Blue 15.3, and Pigment Green 7.

Commonly used pigment numbers in paints and coatings include Pigment Red 112 and 170 for red shades, Pigment Yellow 74 and 83 for yellows, Pigment Blue 15.3 and 15.4 for blues, Pigment Green 7 for greens, Pigment Orange 16 and 34 for oranges, and Pigment Violet 23 for violet shades. Phthalocyanine grades are especially valued for their durability in exterior paints.
