Leather Dyes

  • Acid Dyes

SunSeed® dyes are water-soluble anionic dyes that are applied to fibers such as silk, wool, nylon and modified acrylic fibers using neutral to acid dye baths. Attachment to the fiber is attributed, at least partly, to salt formation between anionic groups in the dyes and cationic groups in the fiber. SunSeed® dyes are not substantive to cellulosic fibers. Our Acid Dyes are free from all the prohibited Amines and Eco-Friendly. Dyes is a permanent liquid dye used for changing the color of all smooth leather materials.

  • Direct Dyes

We have certain Direct Dyes in the Liquid Form. Liquid Direct Dyes are highly re-commended for the Paper Industry. Liquid Direct dyes are extremely easy to handle as compared to Basic dyes. The Fastness property of Direct Dyes is excellent. We are also having certain Direct Dyes having Excellent Light Fastness Property.

  • Pigment Dispersions

Pigment Dispersions are basically fine dispersions of Pigment in aqueous, solvent or universal system. At VOL, We have Pigment Dispersions in aqueous system. All our pigment Dispersions are azo free, formaldehyde free, Apeo free. They are also having a fine particle size suitable for very sensitive applications. Our Pigment Dispersions are as under.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Leather is primarily dyed using Acid Dyes, which are water-soluble anionic dyes that penetrate the leather structure and bond through salt formation with the cationic amino groups in the collagen fibres. Direct Dyes are also used for certain leather applications, particularly when deeper penetration and better levelling are required. Pigment finishes (binder-based pigment dispersions) are applied on the leather surface as a top coat for opacity, scratch resistance, and special colour effects. Basic Dyes are used in some specialty leather colouring applications.
Key fastness properties for leather dyes include rub fastness (dry and wet rubbing, to prevent colour transfer to clothing or skin), lightfastness (especially for leather goods used in outdoor or well-lit environments), perspiration fastness (for upholstery, footwear, and accessories that come in contact with skin), water fastness, and resistance to flexing and crocking. Premium leather goods — particularly automotive upholstery and high-end fashion items — require especially high ratings across all parameters.
Safe leather dyes must be free from prohibited aromatic amines, heavy metals, and other toxic substances regulated by standards such as REACH (EU), California Proposition 65, and Oeko-Tex Leather Standard. Restricted substances testing is particularly important for leather articles that come into direct skin contact — such as gloves, footwear insoles, watch straps, and upholstery. Buyers should always source leather dyes from manufacturers who certify amine-free and eco-friendly compliance through third-party testing.
Full-grain leather retains the natural surface of the hide and is dyed through — using penetrating acid or direct dyes — to show the natural texture and grain. Because the natural surface is exposed, the dye must be of very high quality with excellent lightfastness and rub fastness. Corrected-grain leather has the surface buffed or sanded to remove imperfections, then coated with a pigment finish (binder + pigment dispersion) to create a uniform, opaque colour surface. The pigment finish provides more consistent appearance but less breathability than full-grain dyeing.
