FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Paper manufacturing uses several types of colourants depending on the application. Direct Dyes (particularly in liquid form) are the most widely used for pulp colouring — they dissolve easily in water and distribute uniformly in the paper pulp. Basic Dyes produce very bright, vivid shades on paper and are used for stationery and speciality paper. Pigment Dispersions are used for surface coating and tinting of paper where opacity and bright shade are required. Acid Dyes are used in certain speciality paper grades.
Liquid dyes are strongly preferred in the paper industry because they dissolve instantly in water without heating or prolonged stirring — saving time in the paper mill. They eliminate dust hazards associated with powder handling, allow precise, consistent dosing using metering pumps in automated systems, and ensure uniform distribution in the paper pulp. Direct Black 22 and other Direct Dyes in liquid form are particularly popular for this reason, and the consistent shade batching they deliver is critical in paper production where colour uniformity across large runs is essential.
Pulp dyeing involves adding dyes to the paper pulp before the sheet is formed on the paper machine — the colour penetrates throughout the thickness of the paper and is visible from both sides. It is used for coloured writing paper, tissue, and packaging boards. Surface dyeing applies colour to the finished paper surface using a size press, coating, or printing process — it is used for special effects, coated papers, and packaging where only the surface needs to be coloured and cost efficiency is important.
Dyes and pigments used in food-contact paper and packaging must comply with food safety regulations — they must be free from harmful substances such as heavy metals, prohibited aromatic amines, and other restricted chemicals. They should not migrate from the paper into food products. In many markets, only substances listed on approved positive lists (such as those under EU Regulation 10/2011 or FDA 21 CFR) are permitted for food-contact packaging. Manufacturers must obtain appropriate certifications and test results from their dye suppliers.
